What is Baseball, Anyway?

Baseball is a game which is played by a couple of teams. These teams switch between offensive and defensive positions. There will be nine baseball players on each side and the point of the game is to earn more runs than the competition! One run will be composed of hitting four bases which are located on the diamond. A home run, which is a big hit that goes into the stands (without going foul), will also count as a run.

Batters try to hit pitched balls in order to get on base or get home runs. Defensive players try to catch balls which have been hit, with a mind to blocking runs from the offensive team. Defensive players may also tag players with caught baseballs in order to ensure that they are “out”. Each team gets three “outs” during its time at bat. Once these three outs happen, the teams switch places.

What Equipment is Used?

The equipment which is used will vary based on whether a team is out on the field (defensive) or hitting pitched baseballs (offensive). Defensive players will be outfitted with baseball gloves, which are leather products that fit onto hands and make it easier to catch the ball. Offensive players who are ready to bat will carry baseball bats. In the Major Leagues, wooden bats are used. However, metal bats are permitted in other leagues.

About Baseball Fields

The Infield is the area of the field which is close to the four bases. The area further out is typically covered in grass and it is known as the Outfield. With regard to the infield, bases are situated ninety feet from one another, although the spaces may be shortened when younger kids are playing!

Defensive Position Facts

In terms of defensive positions, there is a pitcher, who throws the baseballs over home plate, where offensive players try to hit them with baseball bats. Other defensive positions are first base, second base, short-stop and third base.

As well, there are a trio of players in the outfield, and these players are classified as left field, center field and right field.

There are three outfielders: the left fielder, center fielder and right fielder.

Every baseball game runs for nine innings. In pro games and certain amateur games, there may be overtime when a game remains tied after nine innings.

In terms of offensive players, there will be nine players in the batting order and the order can’t be changed during the game, although some substitutions may be permitted in certain cases.
